POPULATION
There are 80 million people in Egypt, with 20 million living in the capital city, Cairo.

LANGUAGE
The first language spoken is Arabic, however English and French are widely spoken.

LOCAL CUSTOMS
Egyptians are kind friendly people who welcome you anywhere you go. However in tourist areas you will find merchants who will try and sell their product to the tourist. Always refer to your guide who is accompanying the tour.

CLIMATE
Egypt enjoy a Mediterranean climate: basically dry and mild. Temperature in simmer (May - October) ranges between 20-38C and in winter (November - April) ranges between 10-25C.


CURRENCY
The local currency is the Egyptian Pound which is divided into 100 piasters.Notes are in denominations of 1,5,10,20,50 & 100. Piasters are denominations of 5,10,25 & 50. Most hotels and shops accept US Dollar and accept most major credit card.

ELECTRICITY

220 volts/50cycle AC with European socket(two round prongs). The tv broadcasting system is SECAM.

FOOD AND WATER
It is recommended to drink bottled water only. Bottled water is widely available at hotels, restaurant and shops. In general, eating at hotels and restaurants is safe exercise normal caution to local made drinks and uncooked foods.

SHOPPING
Most shops are open between 10 am to 10 pm from Monday to Saturday. Some shops are open on Sunday. Egypt is renowned for the best cotton in the world.

TIPPING
Tipping is customary in the Middle East mostly for meal bills and also including tour guide, drivers and hotel/airport porters.
